Our First Grant
SNAP-NC 2007
The Spay-Neuter Assistance Program of North Carolina is known as SNAP-NC. Formed over seven years ago by licensed veterinarians, it was the first mobile low-cost spay-neuter service in the state of North Carolina. Since its inception SNAP-NC has safely performed over 37,000 successful spay and neuter surgeries.
It is led by Dr. Laureen Bartfield. In addition to running SNAP-NC, Dr. Bartfield is the Contract Veterinarian for Wake County Animal Shelter and Control in Raleigh. She is also the Veterinarian for Chatham County, NC, is a certified animal cruelty investigator and is mom to a not insignificant number of rescued animals including chickens, ducks, a goose, peafowl, horses, dogs, cats and a pig.
Chrissie's Fund is providing the funding for an additional mobile hospital for SNAP-NC. Dr. Bartfield and her crew have designed the new unit. They are so intent on making every square inch count they have given up their bathroom to allow for additional large kennels. The new hospital's target population will be large mixed breed dogs as they tend to be the most difficult to adopt out from the shelters.
Dr. Bartfield and Chrissie's Fund were brought together by a Fund Board Member. Our Board Member had worked with Dr. Bartfield in saving over 300 dogs that were rescued from horrific conditions at the home of an animal hoarder. He writes: "...she made many trips weekly onto the putrid site where the dogs were suffering and sometimes dying...to treat and love them. She withstood death threats and the constant abuse of the hoarder's lawyers. When the dogs were finally rescued, she supervised their transfer and ministered to them as they began their slow rehabilitation. She was their doctor, their mother, their savior."
The new hospital will be ready in January of 2008. It is a dream come true for Dr. Bartfield; she and her staff are the stuff dreams are made of. Overpopulation is the leading killer of companion animals in the United States. By attacking the problem at its source, SNAP-NC will be saving the lives of countless animals.
We can't think of a more perfect partner for the inception of Chrissie's Fund.
